September's Brain Teaser

Coin Catch

Mariah was cleaning out her purse and found a handful of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. She found 16 coins in all.

She had:
the same number of nickels as pennies.
$1.00 in quarters.
2 more dimes than quarters.

Use this information and the following U.S. coin values to answer the question below.
5 pennies = 5 cents, or 1 nickel
2 nickels = 10 cents, or 1 dime
5 nickels = 25 cents, or 1 quarter
4 quarters = 100 cents, or 1 dollar, written $1.00

How much money did she find in all?

She found $1.78
We knew this because we made a chart, filled in the quarters and dimes and added them up and it was $1.60. Then we knew we needed 16 coins and we had already used 10 coins and needed 6 more, so we put 3 in nickles and 3 in pennies. That was .18 cents so $1.60 + $.18=$1.78

Hi am Jennifer
1.00 is 4 quarters.And 6 dimes is .60. 5 nickles is 25 and 5 pennies are .5.
And 1.00 + 60 = 1.60
And 1.60 + 25 = 1.85
and 1.85 + 5 = 1.90
